In June 2018, Chen was initially sentenced to life imprisonment by Chifeng Intermediate Court. Despite an appeal to the Autonomous Region High Court and subsequent retrial, the verdict remained unchanged. Only after multiple efforts and a lengthy process, including pandemic disruptions, did the High Court reconsider. They acknowledged the defense's arguments, including self-surrender and applying lighter sentencing under old and new laws, ultimately reducing the sentence.
Throughout, Mr. An tirelessly communicated with judges and prosecutors, analyzed extensive case files, and made numerous trips to the remote detention center in Inner Mongolia, facing travel challenges. Despite hardships, the lawyer's dedication brought hope to Chen's family, ensuring legal rights were upheld amid evolving transport infrastructure.
