To implement President Xi's directive of "striving to be lawyers who satisfy the Party and the people" and the Ministry of Justice's "Five Hopes," as well as the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice's notice on promoting lawyers' participation in public legal services, Senior Partner An Hongpeng and intern lawyer Wang Gaiming of JAVY Law Firm were invited by the Hebei Provincial Prison Administration Bureau to participate in the "Beijing Lawyers Public Welfare Trip" at Shijiazhuang Prison on June 19, 2024. They conducted lectures for prison officers and inmates.
Initial Meeting
Before the event, An Hongpeng and his team met with Shijiazhuang Prison Deputy Warden Chai Yuping and Education and Reform Director Yue Yuhai to discuss the scale of the inmate population, main types of crimes, and education management models. This helped design targeted legal education and integrity management content to enhance the effectiveness and relevance of the sessions.
Book Donation
During the book donation segment, Mr. An presented his work, "Analysis of Legal Risks and Psychological Offense and Defense in Typical Cases Involving Leading Cadres," to Shijiazhuang Prison.
Legal Lecture
In his lecture, Mr. An leveraged his expertise in criminal defense and the prevention of duty-related crimes, drawing from his experiences in disciplinary inspection and prosecution. He used a case involving multiple crimes of aiding a criminal to escape punishment and accepting bribes to illustrate legal principles and disciplinary rules. This approach aimed to awaken awareness among party members and cadres, emphasizing respect for the law, and guiding inmates to appreciate the rule of law, respect legal regulations, and comply with rules. This would aid them in their reform and reintegration efforts.
Interactive Session
After the lecture, Mr. An engaged in a face-to-face dialogue with inmates, providing on-site legal education, answering questions, addressing appeals, and clarifying procedural issues. This helped demystify legal recourse and alleviate some inmates' doubts and concerns, fostering a genuine acknowledgment of guilt and a determination to reform and return to society.
Impact and Future Plans
The Lecture not only demonstrated JAVY lawyers' commitment to public welfare but also embodied their goal of being "lawyers who serve the Party and the people." The event received high praise from the Hebei Provincial Prison Administration Bureau, Shijiazhuang Prison officers, and inmates. Moving forward, Mr. An plans to participate in more legal education activities within the Hebei prison system.
