    Yang Qi:

Hello, I am Yang Qi from JAVY law firm, my main practice area is civil and commercial dispute resolution. I am very honoured to accept this interview.

Q: What made you choose to join JAVY law firm?

    Yang Qi:

My good friend works in JAVY law firm, she often talked to me about her work and life, and her sharing of this place made me have a good impression of this place. At that time, I was in a stage of confusion, she invited me to visit the firm a few times, and seriously introduced me to the firm's culture and philosophy, and I felt that all aspects and myself are a better match.

I've been working here for a month now, and the overall feeling is very good. Colleagues are very enthusiastic, even though I am a newcomer, they will take the initiative to communicate with me and provide me with assistance. The firm also often holds lectures on various topics, which not only enriches our professional knowledge, but also promotes communication and exchange.

In addition, I especially like the Tonghui River in front of the door, willow trees swaying in the wind, whenever the brain is ‘down’, walk along the river, the whole person will relax.

Q: Why did you choose to become a lawyer?

    Yang Qi, Lawyer:

I chose to become a lawyer because of my self-knowledge. During my study of law, I began to realise that I have some character strengths that are more suitable for a lawyer's career, and the good grades I got in some debating competitions and moot courts in school made me more convinced of my career direction.

Secondly, I may have been influenced by some legal dramas. Many of the American dramas I watched before were related to lawyers, such as ‘The Gold Medal Lawyers’, ‘Boston Legal’, ‘The Getaway’, ‘The Pride and Joy’, and so on. While watching the dramas, I dreamed of having Alan's eloquence, Denny's humour, Harvey's talent, Mike's sensitivity, Alicia's wisdom and Annalise's dominance, and I was looking forward to becoming such a person myself.

Furthermore, the nature of the profession, lawyers are a profession that requires constant learning and advancement. Because law and society are not static, lawyers need to keep abreast of the latest news, legal developments, policy changes, economic trends and social developments, as well as learning about various industries. This is certainly full of challenges, and I happen to be someone who likes new things and challenges.

In the end, it may be due to sheer love for the law. As Steve Jobs said, ‘The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.’ I think I've found it.

It may be a bit idealistic, but being able to believe in and practice your idealism is something that is full of happiness and fulfilment.

Q: Do you have any legal seniors you admire?

    Yang Qi, Lawyer:

To say that I admire legal seniors, I prefer to say that I admire some qualities. In reality, I have met a lot of excellent legal seniors, they are calm and collected in the courtroom, meticulous logic; in the case of rigorous and meticulous, always able to find a breakthrough; in life and full of warmth to the people, with the softness of the law is not lost. These qualities are particularly admirable to me and have become my role models.

If I have to mention a name, I think it might be a cross between reality and film and television. Alan Shore from Boston Legal, for example, blew me away with his eloquence and insight, but at the same time managed to maintain an understanding of human nature and empathy. It's a balance of rationality and emotion that I hope I can strive for in my career.

Q: Do you have any practice philosophy or life motto, and what is its profound meaning?

    Yang Qi, Lawyer:

I have always respected the saying: strive to let the people feel fairness and justice in every judicial case. This is not only a requirement for the court, but also the mission of every judicial participant. For lawyers, a case may be a link in their own affairs, but for clients, it may be the first, or even the only, time in their lives that they are actually involved in the judicial process. Behind every case there is a family, a life, and even a microcosm of society.

As a lawyer, not only do we need to have solid legal skills and superb litigation skills, but we also need to always understand that our work is not only to maintain social justice and righteousness, but also to make every client feel respected and heard from the judicial process.

I hope that I can do not just a case handler, but also a listener, communicator and supporter, standing in the position of the parties, empathy to understand their needs, to help them through difficult times. The power of the law lies in justice, but even more so in the warmth and care behind it. I hope that through my efforts, I can make every case not only a legal battle, but also a reflection of humanity and justice.

Q : What other hobbies do you have outside of work?

    Yang Qi, Lawyer:

After work, I like to do some relaxing ‘no-brainer’ things. For example, making coffee, yoga, taking a walk or spending time with my pets. Recently, when the sun is shining, I often go to the park to find a quiet corner and sit down to feel everything around me: the temperature of the wind, the swaying of the grass, the chirping of the birds, and even the texture of the moss on the rocks. The feeling of slowly integrating into nature would allow me to withdraw from my life, and it was really healing.

I also have a Ragdoll cat in Beijing, which is particularly clingy and will run over to rub up against you and meow every time you come home. I love to cuddle it and pet its little head and soft tummy, and the sound of the kitty purring makes me feel so relieved.

When taking a walk or being alone with nature, it can let one's mind empty, and many complicated cases or disturbances at work are rather easier to find solution ideas in this calm atmosphere. The sense of companionship brought by owning a cat has also helped me learn to better handle stress and maintain emotional peace. For lawyers, a stable mind and clear thinking are very important, and these small hobbies have helped me a lot.

Q: What are your personal goals for the next three to five years?

    Yang Qi, Lawyer:

To be honest, I don't have very specific goals for the three to five years, such as how much money I want to earn or what position I want to obtain.

Compared to these, what I hope I can achieve is: firstly, to maintain my love for the law and the beginning of my career; secondly, to keep learning new knowledge as well as keeping an eye on the cutting-edge development of the law; and lastly, to maintain a healthy body and a peaceful mind. I hope that if I can stick to the above three points in the coming years, good things will naturally happen~!
