In this episode of JAVY Talk Show, Li Aishuang Esq. shared her story, about her pro bono work, her being a mother, as well as her vision of the lawyer career.
Q: Could you introduce yourself?
A: I was born in the 1980s, prior to becoming a lawyer, I worked as a corporate counsel for 10 years (2 years as assistant and 8 years as manager), and since 2011 I’ve become an independent lawyer.
Q: Since your practice, which case do you find the most memorable?
A: The case to represent my own child who was hurt by a domestic worker, he was only one year and half then, got bruise in his forehead due to mishandling of the worker. This two-year case has transformed me, as both a lawyer and a mother, because I realized that judicial justice is the last line of defense for common people, in the same sense that parents are the last line of defense for their own children. I’ve always thought about the case, and it constantly reminds me about the importance and responsibility of lawyers for their clients.
Q: What is the most difficult case you’ve ever handled, and why?
A: A labor dispute case which later evolved into a mental tug-of-war, at the start of the case the other litigant was an employee, by the end he has already got his Ph.D. degree, I was initially the legal manager, then became a lawyer, so you can see the case has dragged for so long. It makes me think that dispute resolution should only be a side line of our life, never the main story. However, one should not shy away from protecting their own rights, that’s the meaning of existence of law for sure.
Q: What's your impression of JAVY Law Firm?
A: In my opinion, JAVY is the most beautiful law firm in China, the office building is the ideal combination of traditional Chinese style and modern architecture design. Since my joining in 2021, I’ve known almost all lawyers at JAVY, the atmosphere here is very friendly, there is no barriers to communication, and they share their knowledge without reservation. I find JAVY an inclusive and open platform for lawyers, the leaders and colleagues are respectable and amiable. This is the law firm where I would love to place my dreams and expectations.
Q: What’s your insight on pro bono work?
A: Pro bono is one of the core values of JAVY. The law firm always put a great emphasis on pro bono work and has done a huge deal about it, the efforts include: free legal consultation for local communities and businesses from time to time, numerous seminars about public interest litigations & animal rights, etc., organizing donations, taking up legal aid cases, answering calls for public legal service call centers & legal aid hotlines.
As for myself, I love doing pro bono works, I work for Beijing Legal Aid Center and the 12348 legal aid hotline. The Legal Aid Center awarded JAVY twice for our excellent guest service, which I’m very proud of. I recently got appointed as a public interest lawyer to protect youth rights, by Chaoyang Youth Welfare Legal Consultation and Service Base, this is the area I’m more than willing to participate, because I’m a lawyer and mother. Pro bono for me is to get legal work done with love and professionalism.
Q: How do you balance work and family life?
A: My parents, husband and child are all understanding and tolerant about my busy work. In my 12 years of marriage, we never quarrel, of course that depends on how you define “quarrel”, but for me it’s not worth a bitter fight if a solution is possible through communication. People say I look young, simply because I don’t have internal friction in my family life, even when I have a busy job. This is how I’d advise my clients to do if they ever got dragged into a family dispute, sometimes it worked like a charm.
Q: What are your expectations about your future?
A: A plain life calls for tender dreams, as a lawyer with dreams, I will stay kind and positive. I love my profession, and the firm strength granted to me by justice.
